I Need a Doctor... or Maybe a Nurse

This cake was for a young man named Kody who was graduating from nursing school. Unfortunately there was some miscommunication and Kody's mom ordered another cake and cupcakes from somewhere else. Luckily, this cake did not go to waste. One of my husband's co-workers has some neighbors that are doctors. They have a big extended family so this was perfect for them! I was unhappy about the mishap but was glad that it ended up in someones belly rather than in the trash can! Anyways, on to the details!

This cake started out as a 1/4 sheet cake (9" x 13") and was hand carved into the shape of a scrub shirt. The cake itself was red velvet and had vanilla buttercream filling and icing... tinted blue obviously! The entire cake was outlined in black food coloring to give it a little more definition.

The letters were cut from fondant and defined with that same black food coloring. Upon delivery of this cake to the family that actually received it, I'm told the first thing they said was, "Who's Kody?" LOL :)

The top of the cake was decorated with a stethoscope, name tag, the collar of the shirt, and even a cute little clothing tag showing off the year of Kody's graduation!

The ear piece for the stethoscope made completely from fondant.

The chest piece for the stethoscope. Again... completely edible and made from fondant. You can even see a close up of Kody's name tag as well.

Here's the collar to the shirt. It's hard to see but I even put stitching on the collar. It's all about the little details with me!

Look at those pockets holding all of those goodies that are necessary for a nurse on a daily basis! I did just say I was all about the details, didn't I? The pockets were a lighter colored fondant so that they would stand out a bit.

After placing this latex glove inside the pocket I realized that A.) this nurse has HUGE hands in proportion to his scrub shirt... and B.) I probably should have positioned the fingers a little differently! ;)

In this pocket was a pen... necessary to sign all those patient charts. A syringe... necessary to draw blood or give much needed medicine. And either scissors or clamps (you take your pick)... necessary to cut bandages. Oh and did you notice those little stitches again. So cute!

Even though the intended recipient never received this cake I was really proud of it. I loved the way it turned out and am confident that I could do it again if there were more doctors or nurses out there graduating from medical school. *Hint *Hint Tell your medical friends! :)

Fiesta de Graduación con Pastelitos!

This is just a short little post to show off some cupcakes that were for a graduation FIESTA!!!!

I forgot to take pictures of these cuppies but fortunately the grad's dad was a professional photographer and got this shot and sent it to me! This was for a friend's graduation party from high school. She was having a party that was Mexican themed through and through. She had a taco bar, a margarita machine (non-alcoholic for the kids), and my margarita cupcakes and chocolate jalapeno cupcakes.

Both cupcakes were topped with cream cheese icing. For the margarita cupcakes it was a tequila lime cream cheese icing, candy lime, and a green straw. Many guests asked, "Am I supposed to drink this?" Then they didn't wait for an answer and just bit right in! The chocolate jalapeno cupcakes were topped with a classic cream cheese icing and a candied jalapeno on top. Although these cupcakes are bite-sized, they seem to steal the show every time! And this time was no exception! All in all though, the party guests loved both cupcakes and they were all gone by the end of the night.

Congratulations on graduating Cassi! I know that you will do great in College! And thanks for allowing me to provide the dessert for your party!

Yo Adrian! It's me, Rocky!

Ok so it's not the Slyvester Stallone version of Rocky but I think I did a pretty good job capturing Rocky the Raven, the mascot of Benedictine College in Atchinson, Kansas. Here's an upclose picture of the "real" Rocky.

This cake was for Lindsey who had just graduated from College and was throwing a graduation bash. She wanted not only a cake, that was fun and cute that sported her school colors, but also a sculpted figure of Rocky the Raven. It was an 8 inch square cake iced and filled with vanilla buttercream. The cake itself was strawberry. What a classic combination! The cake was decorated with fondant decorations that matched the invitations to Lindsey's graduation party. The only difference was, these decorations were edible!

The little balls of fondant around the cake were painstakingly hand rolled but they turned out to be the perfect addition to this cake. The black "ribbon" was decorated with buttercream dots and wrapped around red fondant diamonds. And that banner on the top congratulating the graduate? Yep, that's fondant too with hand piped text!

And HEEERRRREEE's Rocky......!!!!!!

Rocky was 100% modeling chocolate minus the pole that he sat on to make himself stand up on the cake. It was my very first time working with modeling chocolate and I CANNOT WAIT to work with it again! I loved the consistency and the ease of modeling things!

There were a few items that were not modeling chocolate but fondant on Rocky including his tassel on his graduation cap...

His toenails...

His sweater and college logo...

And that oh-so-important Degree...!

Overall, this cake went over REALLY well and I loved the way it turned out as well! As I was walking in the door, Lindsey's mom exclaimed, "Oh, Rocky is so cute!" Well, I think so too! Just so you can get an idea of what I had to model after, here's a "to scale" picture of Rocky next to my version. Yeah, I think I can pat myself on the back for that one!

Congratulations Lindsey on graduating!
